A Composite is any material made from multiple layers of the same or different materials which are pressed and combined into a single layer product. They are extremely strong, flexible and light-weight – particularly in contrast to traditional metals. Because of their very strong and light-weight nature, composites are the material of choice in the aerospace industry. Aerospace composites utilise many different materials including Ceramics, Metals and Plastics and use other materials such as Glass filaments, Powders or Flakes of materials as strengthening agents or adhesives within the process press forming process.
Composites are commonly used as moulded profiles and interior panels for aircraft such as the moulded window area where the window blind sits. These panels can be pressed or ‘closed moulded’ which typically presses the composite materials together using pressure, glue and heat or ‘open moulding’ which is laid up by hand using various components and then uses a vacuum system to pull liquids such as epoxy resins throughout the composite to encapsulate all parts of the composite. Both porous and non-porous Taconic PTFE coated products as well as PTFE Skived film tapes can be used in this Vac forming process. In the closed moulding or press process – PTFE coated conveyor belts can be used in the pre-heating process prior to pressing.
